School Systems/Education - Present Day NYC

Five Boroughs: Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, Manhattan, Staten Island - 1,038,001 Enrolled 2014-2015

Over 100,00 English Language Learners per district (27.5% population in NYC is Hispanic)

Attendance Rates: Bronx lowest at 88.78%, Queens highest at 91.55%

Avg. Class size - 25

In NYC only 27% have a Bachelor's Degree or higher

200,000 students opted out of taking common core tests as part of a protest last year

Majority of students not considered proficient in math or English

Violence in schools is a major problem

Systems and Gov't focused on trying to "make schools safer, increase diversity, and equality"
